Mexico reports five additional cholera cases from La Huasteca region
The Mexico Ministry of Health has reported five new cholera cases from the La Huasteca region on the Gulf coast, this brings the total number of cases in the current outbreak to 176.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) Global Alert and Response (GAR) today, from 9 September to 25 October 2013, a total of 176 confirmed cases, including one death, of infection with Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa toxigenic has been reported in the country.
The cases are broken down as follows: two are from the Federal District, 157 cases from the state of Hidalgo, nine from the state of Mexico, two from the state of San Luis Potosi and six from the state of Veracruz.
In addition, the GAR notes that antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa toxigenic was conducted by the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnostics and Reference (InDRE) which demonstrated that the bacterium was susceptible to the medicines doxycycline and chloramphenicol, with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and resistance to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
Mexican health authorities are implementing measures to ensure access to drinking water and basic sanitation at the community level. In addition, awareness campaigns are being carried out in Spanish and indigenous languages.
