Medical Musts: Critical Reasons to Go to Hospital After a Motor Accident
You just got into a car accident. Should you go to the hospital? Of course you should silly. Then, why do so many people not do this? Answer: because they “feel” fine. Sometimes, they don’t want the hassle of going to the emergency room, or the expense. But, little-known and rarely talked-about side-effect of not going is severe – death.
Blows To The Head
A blow to the head will clean more than your clock. It might clean out your memory, too. Some people who have severe head trauma suffer from momentary (or longer) amnesia. Concussions can cause you to black out, while contusions (a form of bruising) can cause bleeding in and around the brain. Medically, this is called a hematoma, and it can be life-threatening if it’s not caught in time.
Even if you feel no pain immediately after the accident, you could have a serious head injury and not realize it. Bleeding may be slow and symptoms might not show up for several days or weeks – unfortunately when it is advanced to a complicated medical problem.
Headaches, dizziness, vomiting, are all symptoms of a concussion or contusion and should be checked out immediately.
Neck Injuries That Cause More Than Neck Pain
A neck injury may result in tension and cervicogenic headaches. These are a lot like migranes or cluster headaches that start at the base of the neck, or the shoulders, or upper back, and radiate (develop) up the back of the head. It eventually develops into a full-blown headache that can be felt behind the eyes, in the middle of the forehead, at the base of the skull, and even in the temples.
It’s excruciating and debilitating, but it can be solved in a rather uncomplicated manner – prescription-strength NSAIDs, chiropractic adjustments, and intensive Active Release Therapy.
Back Injuries And Spinal Problems
Car accidents that cause back injuries may damage the spine if the blow is hard enough, or they may just cause a muscle spasm or trigger point to develop around an injured area. These are difficult to treat, but most doctors will tell you that the treatment options available to you all involve PT, with better doctors recommending barbell weight training programs like Starting Strength to strengthen the back and build both hip (glute and hamstring) and spinal erector strength to control and decrease pain in the lower back.
Psychological Injuries
Injuries aren’t just limited to physical pain and injuries. Many people involved in a car accident suffer emotional trauma, with some people refusing to drive or be in a vehicle afterwards. The “brush with death” can be so pronounced that a person developed a phobia of driving or being in any type of vehicle. This often requires extensive psychological treatment to overcome their fear and lead a normal life.
Why It’s Important To Go To The Doctor After An Accident – A Legal Perspective
One of the biggest implications in going to the doctor or a hospital after an accident is the legal ramifications. The prominent car accident lawyers in Vancouver at the Watson Goepel firm all too often see people that don’t take the right action after an accident. Not going to the emergency room is both unwise and unhelpful in sorting out your case against the other driver.
By getting a medical exam, you may actually make the lawyer’s job much easier, and win the money you need to regain something resembling a normal life.
