Matt Damon talks ‘Bourne 5’ plot, set in a post Edward Snowden world
Jason Bourne will be back next year and star Matt Damon returns to reprise his role from three highly successful films. In fact, the production is set to begin next week and Damon opened up about the film’s story while talking with Buzzfeed.
“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change,” he said, alluding to his last film, 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, and now the changes in a global spy network.
“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
The untitled new film, following 2012’s The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner, will be another globetrotting adventure.
“We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy. And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of…” Damon trailed off with Buzzfeed.
The new Bourne brings Julia Stiles back to the fold as Nicky Parsons. Tommy Lee Jones joins the cast as a high-ranking CIA officer, and Alicia Vikander has also signed on in an unspecified role (likely the love interest). Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortenson is rumored to play the films antagonist, possibly another hitman or agent. French actor Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Shrek) has also been cast.
Renner, who played Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy, will not return.
Director Paul Greengrass is directing from a script he wrote with Christopher Rouse, and will additionally produce with Damon, Frank Marshall, Greg Goodman, and Ben Smith. Rouse and Henry Morrison serve as executive producers.
Bourne 5 opens in theaters July 29, 2016.
