Maryland woman, Zakieya Latrice Avery murders two children in ‘exorcism’ injures 2 others
A Germantown, Maryland mother murdered two of her children and severely injured her two others during a “botched exorcism” police report.
Zakieya Latrice Avery, age 28, and Monifa Denise Sanford, age 21, were allegedly attempting to perform an exorcism on the children which left the 1-year-old (Norell Harris) and 2-year-old dead (Zyana Harris) in a home due to multiple stab wounds. Avery’s 5-year-old and 8-year-old were also injured and are receiving medical treatment, Montgomery police said.
Captain Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department said Sunday that Avery made the statements during interviews with police detailing the scene and events which were described as a “very bloody scene.”
“Cases like this are heartbreaking” said Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims along with the 911 operators, police officers, evidence technicians, and fire and EMS personnel that responded.”
Police say Sanford and Avery each face two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Both were being held without bond.
At the time of this writing, Taniya Harris, 5, and Martello Harris, 8, are still hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
