Maryland straight-A students get party, complaints arise for students who didn’t get good grades, they ‘end up feeling bad’
A pizza and dance party for straight-A students at a Maryland middle school has sparked controversy among parents and students alike.
Kids at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring, Md., were rewarded with an “Academic Achievement Celebration” for having good grades. The party occurred during the final class of the day and other students were excluded until school was over, as reported by WTTG-TV.
Exclusion or life lesson appears to be what some parents and students are asking themselves.
Some parents don’t their child excluded based on grades and others are saying honoring achievement is important and worthy of recognition.
“The students that don’t get to go end up feeling bad,” one parent told The Washington Post, claiming that the party divides students into groups.
A spokesperson for Montgomery County Public Schools says “recognitions are decided at the school level in collaboration with the school community.” She suggested that parents with questions bring them up with their principal and other officials at their school.
So, what do you think? Is the dance a great reward for those kids who excelled or does it hurt kids’ self-esteem because they didn’t make it?
