Maryland: PETA’s vegan billboard wants seafood eaters to stop, see crabs as individuals, ‘just like humans’

A new billboard in Baltimore, Maryland, has gotten a big negative response, particularly from the city’s fans of seafood.

On the billboard, it has a picture of a crab, along with the caption, “I’m ME, Not MEAT.”

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently posted a billboard that encourages people to stop eating crab meat and “go vegan” near several seafood restaurants in the city’s Inner Harbor neighborhood.

Check out the photo below.

In a statement, the animal rights leftist group said that sign comes “as part of a nationwide campaign to encourage diners to leave crabs and other sea animals off dinner plates and in their aquatic homes.”

“Just like humans, crabs feel pain and fear, have unique personalities, and value their own lives,” PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said in the statement. “PETA’s billboard aims to give Charm City residents some food for thought about sparing sensitive marine animals the agony of being boiled alive or crushed to death in fishing nets simply by going vegan.”

“They are individuals. They can feel pain, they can sense the world around them and they definitely do not want to be boiled alive,” Amber Canavan with PETA said.

Restaurant owners have expressed their discontent with the billboard.

“I don’t think they knew what they are getting themselves into when they put that up,” John Minadakis, of Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, told CBS.

The billboard will remain in place for a month, just in time for the Baltimore Seafood Festival in September.

Earlier this month, PETA pushed a nearly identical billboard in Maine that featured a lobster. The marketing push came just ahead of the state’s lobster festival in Rockland.

I wonder where they got the money for the billboard. The last news from peta indicated that they been sued for stealing and then killing a dog they took from some family’s front porch. I wonder how much that cost their donors?

  2. Jennofur OConnor says:

Is it really too much to ask people to stop for just a moment and give thought to WHO is on their plate, not what?

  3. Lucy Post says:

It’s simply not necessary to eat crabs or any other animal. We can spare them so much pain and enjoy better health for ourselves by choosing tasty vegan foods instead.

  4. Allison Cares says:

This billboard is a very important message and reminder that all animals are thinking, feeling beings who experience pain. I hope it will encourage all who see it to choose vegan instead.

  5. KimMarie says:

I agree. We cannot continue killing and eating animals if we want our grandchildren to have a future. It’s killing the Earth, perpetuates violence and endangers human health.

  6. Heather Moore says:

I hope this billboard helps open some eyes. Even before I went vegan, I thought it was cruel to eat crabs, lobsters, and other sea animals. You’re eating the animal’s whole body, breaking it apart and digging out the flesh. All animals, including crabs and other crustaceans, can feel pain and suffer.
