Marwan Kenzari joins Tom Cruise for ‘The Mummy’ reboot
Marwan Kenzari has joined the cast of Universal’s The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, who will play the titular character.
Universal has hired Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to develop a Classic Monster universe for the studio with rebooted versions of the studio’s famed cratures and Kurtzman will direct The Mummy, producing alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel.
Kenzari also has key roles in Terry George’s The Promise alongside Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac and MGM’s Ben-Hur remake, which stars Jack Huston and Morgan Freeman. He can be seen next in Collide alongside Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones.
Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson area also starring. Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange) is penning the script. Details have been kept quiet, but the adventure will be set in the present day, a big contrast to the trilogy with Brendan Fraser.
The Mummy and other projects were rumored to be “action-adventure movies,” with little horror, but Kurtzman quickly debunked those claims.
“Yeah, I think it’s a fair response and it’s actually not — I think there was some lost in translation quality to the way it was received, because I promise you there will be horror in these movies. It is our life goal to make a horror movie. The tricky part is actually how you combine horror with either adventure or suspense or action and be true to all the genres together. In some way, Mummy, dating all the way back to the Karloff movie, was the first to do that. It was the first to combine horror with — I wouldn’t say action, but certainly a lot of suspense. So it’s more about how you blend the different elements and stay true to each one, but there will definitely be horror in the monster movies… We will hopefully serve it up good and plenty.”
Universal executive VP of production Jon Mone and VP of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.
The Mummy is set to arrive in theaters on June 9, 2017.
