During the survey conducted from September 13 through September 22 , field teams from the Florida Department of Health visited approximately 2,000 randomly selected addresses in the Rio and Jensen Beach area, providing information on dengue fever and with consent collecting a blood sample for dengue fever analysis.

In total, approximately 360 samples were collected. Weather conditions and vacancy rates in the area did pose some challenges to the field teams.

“We are grateful for the community support that we received during this survey and the collaboration with Martin County Mosquito Control and Martin County Government.” said Karlette Peck, Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Martin County. “We expect this survey will give us an overview of the extent of dengue fever in the community, we also hope to learn more about the risk factors associated with dengue, as well as, the precautions that residents are taking to protect themselves from mosquito borne illness.”

In addition, health officials reported that there has been no new cases of dengue fever, with the total cases remaining at 20.

Earlier this week, Florida blood bank, OneBlood announced they were resuming blood collections in St. Lucie County; however, blood collections in Martin County remain suspended.
