Mark Hasse identified as Asst DA killed in North Texas shooting
Mark Hasse, a Chief Prosecutor, was gunned down on Thursday morning in a shooting at the North Texas courthouse.
At a Thursday. press conference, officials said Hasse was walking from the parking lot to his office when he was assaulted by an unknown person and “shot multiple times,” according to authorities.
Hasse was then taken to the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Local law enforcement officials decried the shooting as an attack on the criminal justice system.
“We understand that we may come into contact with violent people but this is the next level,” Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes said at the press conference conference.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the shooting. Police said witnesses have reported two shooters wearing all black, one or both of them possibly wearing a tactical-type vest, and driving an older, silver Ford Taurus.
Officials didn’t immediately indicate any motive for the shooting.
In a phone interview with NBC 5’s Scott Gordon, Eric Smenner, a defense attorney in Kaufman and a friend of Hasse’s, said Hasse had dealth with gang issues and had recent cases involving white supremicist groups. Smenner said Hasse’s murder could be retaliation, but that it was too early to say for sure or who may have done it.
The Dallas Morning News credited “authorities with knowledge of the assistant DA’s caseload” as saying he was “heavily involved” in an investigation of the Aryan Brotherhood. According to the release, Ben Christian Dillon, aka “Tuff”, of Houston, and James Marshall Meldrum, aka “Dirty”, both “agreed to commit multiple acts of murder, robbery, arson, kidnapping and narcotics tracking” for the Aryan Brotherhood.
