Mark Hamill talks ‘Star Wars The Force Awakens’ trailer, the reunion, spoilers
The recently released first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens revved up the crazed fan base and was indeed emotional for Mark Hamill. The star tells EW that he “loved” what he saw, but added commentary of his own.
“Best of all, even more than the trailer, I liked watching videos of people watching the trailer,” Hamill told EW while promoting his latest project, Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas, the new animated adaptation of the Elf movie and Broadway musicial (premiering on Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. on NBC).
“You know you sort of get isolated and you forget that to a certain segment of the population that this is very special to them and they love it at a level that most people don’t understand. That was moving to me. I got choked up seeing how happy it made people.”
Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker from the original trilogy with stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew all returning as their respective roles. Hamill did reveal that the first time the famous trio reunited wasn’t on set.
“They had a dinner at a restaurant for us,” Hamill said. “They booked a room at a restaurant where we all met the new cast members. The three of us came together. In many ways, it was an out-of-body experience, but within the first five minutes, it felt like we had never been apart…We were all laughing and it was like we were on a break during The Empire Strikes Back.”
As for plots or any other kinds of spoilers, don’t expect Hamill to spill. “I don’t understand why people would want to know what happens!” he said to EW. “I love not knowing. It’s a whole different world now where there’s an industry whose entire goal is to leak—to leak the entire script. I don’t understand it.”
The new trailer features Andy Serkis’ voiceover and the first looks at new stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac.
Hamill confessed that he never thought he’d be in another Star Wars film. “It was the last thing in the world that I ever expected to happen,” he said. “We had a beginning, a middle and an end. I was able to let go.
“I was nervous when the prequels came out,” Hamill continued. “Would it be like a bunch of strangers rummaging through my toy box? Like, ‘Hey, that’s my light saber, that’s my droid, get away from my floating car.’ But by the time the prequels came out I was surprisingly well-adjusted.”
Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18, 2015.
