Maria Kang talks about ‘What’s Your Excuse’ pic and Facebook post controversies
How can a photo of a mom and her kids and a Facebook post about obesity and health care in America cause such a stir that even the social media giant would ban someone from the site?

“Fit Mom”, Maria Kang, the subject of so much controversy since October, spoke to me about the things that happened surrounding the “What’s Your Excuse” pic to the obesity in America statement and finally, we get to learn more about the 30-something fitness advocate in her own words (Listen to audio below).
“I created that poster (What’s Your Excuse) for my followers”, Kang said. “I wanted to show people that here I am. I’m challenged obviously, I’ve had three kids in three years. I’m a working busy mom but I’m able to make health a priority.”
Maria acknowledges that the feedback on the pic has been tremendous with lots of positive comments; however, Kang has also been called a “bad mom” and a “bad person”, a bully and a “fat-shamer”.
Clearly Kang’s motivation was to inspire others with the poster.
Then there was the more recent Facebook post in response to the Curvy girl lingerie campaign. Clearly, some people didn’t approve of Maria writing about obesity in America and Facebook banned the fitness mom for, in her words, “hate speech”.
The interview closed with me asking, “Who is Maria Kang?”
“Maria Kang is somebody who understands the impact that being unhealthy affects a community and a nation and especially a family”, she said. “I think there is definitely challenges that we’re facing as a nation with our food companies, our fast food, school lunches, there is a lot of things to blame for our obesity crisis, but the real change starts at home.”
