Mali government notifies WHO of four suspected Ebola cases

Guinea’s neighbor to the northeast are reporting suspected cases of Ebola Viral Disease, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) update Apr.5.

The Mali Ministry of Health has notified the WHO of four patients suspected to have a viral hemorrhagic fever who are currently hospitalized. Samples have been sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation testing.

Two of the suspected cases had traveled from Guinea.

Elsewhere in West Africa, the number of clinically compatible cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Guinea and Liberia has risen since last report.

In Guinea, where Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has called the outbreak “unprecedented”, 143 clinically compatible cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) has been reported, of which 54 are laboratory confirmed by PCR. The total number includes 86 deaths (CFR 60%).

The hysteria of the outbreak has caused some mob violence in Guinea. Al Jazerra reports that MSF health workers treating patients in Guinea had to be evacuated after a mob attacked a treatment center in Macenta.

The EVD situation in Liberia has also grown since the last report. The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) of Liberia has reported 18 suspected and 2 confirmed cases of EBV, including 7 deaths, since 24 March (CFR 31%).

The situation in Sierra Leone remains unchanged with two probable EVD deaths reported.

Some key facts about Ebola from the recently released WHO Fact Sheet include:

  • The Ebola virus causes Ebola virus disease (EVD; formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever) in humans.
  • EVD outbreaks have a case fatality rate of up to 90%.
  • EVD outbreaks occur primarily in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests.
  • The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.
  • Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family are considered to be the natural host of the Ebola virus.
  • No specific treatment or vaccine is available for use in people or animals.
