Malaysia holds public inquiry into disappearance of Pastor Joshua Hilmy, wife Ruth Hilmy

According to SUHAKAM (The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia) chairman, Othman Hashim, the commission will decide soon if it will go ahead and hold a public inquiry into the disappearance of pastor Joshua and his wife Ruth Hilmy, the couple who went missing without a trace in 2016.

The public inquiry into the missing couple was supposed to start soon after SUHAKAM had completed its probe into the disappearance of another pastor Raymond Koh and activist Amri Che Mat.

In July, SUHAKAM commissioner Datuk Seri Mah Weng Kwai said “Because of time constraints, we only managed to deal with two cases [so far]. The third one [the couple’s case] is still on the table.”

“We have to decide on the composition of the panel and the timeline for this to be done,” said Mah, adding that he was sure the decision will be made soon.

Hashim said, “Joshua and Ruth Hilmy’s files are still open with little information on the missing couple.” He added that once they collect enough evidence, they will decide whether or not to hold a public inquiry.

He admits that the information they have so far are very limited, so it is difficult to hold a public inquiry.

The Muslim-turned-Christian Malaysian pastor and his Indonesian wife were last seen on November 30, 2016 and are believed to be victims of enforced disappearance.
