In a follow-up to a story in early December, Maine health officials are reporting a substantial increase in confirmed gonorrhea cases in 2012 as compared to the previous year, according to a Maine CDC public health update Jan. 2.
According to the latest numbers released today, the Maine CDC received a total of 456 confirmed cases reported statewide from Jan. 1 to Dec. 28 last year.
This represents a nearly 60 percent increase from 2011 when the state reported 272 cases during the same time frame.
Health officials note that some cases are reported more than once and may represent reinfection, recurrent infection, or persistent infection.
In addition, more cases may have occurred in recent weeks that have not yet been reported.
Gonorrhea, as well as chlamydia cases, have increased in recent years nationally according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released in mid-December.
