‘Mad Max Fury Road’ star Abbey Lee cast in ‘Dark Tower’
Stephen King’s Dark Tower will finally move forward with a big screen adaptation and Deadline reports that Abbey Lee is set to play Tirana.
Lee garnered attention from her role in Mad Max Fury Road, which earned ten Oscar nominations. Deadline notes that “Though described as a lead female role, the Tirana of the novels is a minor member of the Low Men who serve the series’ principle antagonist, the Crimson King.”
Lee will join Idris Elba (Luther, Prometheus, Thor), who will play gunslinger Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey, who takes on the villainous role of King’s multi-dimensional Man in Black.
The film is expected to be an adaption of the first Dark Tower novel, The Gunslinger, with a multi-film franchise planned from the popular novel series. The film will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel with Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, King and Akiva Goldsman producing.
Lee played The Dag in last summer’s Fury Road and appears in next week’s Gods of Egypt.
A Dark Tower adaptation and a TV series have been marred in Hollywood politics for years, but now moves ahead very quickly, set for release in theaters on January 13, 2017.
King considers The Gunslinger to be his “magnum opus” – a story about Roland of Gilead, and his quest to catch the Man in Black, the first of many steps towards Roland’s ultimate destination: The Dark Tower.
The main story takes place in a world that is somewhat similar to the Old West, but exists in a parallel universe. Roland exists in a place where “the world has moved on” with many references to pop culture and technology of the times.
