Luke Evans talks about adapting ‘The Crow’ and starring in ‘Dracula Untold’
From Fast & Furious 6 to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Luke Evans continues to grow an amazing resume which will now include The Crow and playing Dracula later this year.
The long delayed remake of The Crow carries a lot of pressure, which Evans takes very seriously.
“It’s a huge responsibility. It’s a very cult film that’s loved by a lot of people. Sadly there was a big tragedy in the film when it was made and so we have a responsibility to do something very special with it.
“We want to bring the story back to its source material which means it will be a very different telling of the story, not the one that most people know from the 20-year-old film with Brandon Lee.
“So it’s exciting, it’s a lot of physical work at the moment – that’s what I’m doing, losing weight.”
First up, Evans will play the iconic vampire in Dracula Untold.
“They’re big shoes to fill, I’m very aware of that. But what’s interesting about this portrayal is it’s as much about the historical figure that inspires the literary figure as it is about Dracula. And so we start back in Vlad Tepes’ life in the 1400s about his journey and his human experience, and what changes his life and how he becomes this famous vampire.
“So it’s a story people are not expecting and it’s not essentially horror, it’s more based on the human journey as much as it is about the vampire.”
Dracula Untold also stars Dominic Cooper, Samantha Barks, Charlie Cox and opens in theaters October 17, 2014.
James O’Barr, creator of the original The Crow graphic comic book series, will be a consultant on the remake, due to start filming this year, directed by F Javier Gutierrez.
