Libertarian Party rallies massive fundraising to get Lucas Overby on ballot

BREAKING NEWS – EXAMINER: A weekend campaign money bomb, coupled with a generous donation from the Libertarian Party of Florida (LPF) worked together Monday evening (Nov. 18) to secure Overby’s slot on the ballot for the March 11, 2014 Congressional District (CD) 13 Special Election. This contest will decide who fills the congressional seat left vacant since October’s death of long-time Florida Republican Congressman Bill Young.

Libertarian PartyBetween the fundraiser and the LPF donation, Overby brought in over $12,000, comfortably above the required $10,440 filing fee needed for the Libertarian to be listed along with his Democratic and Republican opponents.

Campaign organizes money bomb after petition drive narrowly misses goal

The Overby Campaign organized the money bomb late Last week, after the petition-drive effort to get Libertarian Party (LP) Candidate Lucas Overby’s name listed alongside the Democrat and Republican fell short by a heartbreaking 19 signatures.

Overby for Congress campaign workers gathered over 1,600 petitions, and submitted in excess of 1,300. However, the Florida Division of Elections (DOE) Office in Tallahassee only approved 1,153; Overby needed 1,172 to earn ballot access.

Florida Libertarians respond quickly to assist Overby Campaign

In less than three days, the fundraiser had already raised over $7,000. Still, this amount was less than the $10,440 needed to ensure ballot access, and time was running out for the LP Candidate.

At 2:30 p.m. Monday, LPF Chairperson Dana Cummings contacted the Executive Committee (EC) officers about what was still needed to get Overby on the March 11 ballot. Cummings proposed donating $3,000 to the campaign. Jared Grifoni, At-Large-Representative One for the LPF, made the motion to approve the donation. Region 12 Representative Elsa Martinez quickly seconded the proposal.

Within 90 minutes, the EC had approved the campaign contribution needed to bring Overby over the $10,440 filing-fee threshold, and secure the young Pinellas County Libertarian would have equal ballot access in next year’s CD 13 Special Election. This donation from the LPF, combined with the $9,000 raised in the money bomb (as of early Tuesday morning), equals $12,000 raised by Overby Campaign in a three-day period.

  1. Libertarian candidate Lucas Overby discusses campaigning for Congress, Obamacare and the debt - The Global Dispatch says:

[…] Lucas Overby made some headlines in Florida as the Libertarian Party rallied behind the candidate to ensure his presence on the special election ballot after falling just short of the required […]

  2. Jim Torrance says:

Most Libertarians in Pinellas are supporting Kathleen Peters at this time. She needs some work, but is better than the tax-raising nutcase Overby.

Sadly since expelling the Libertarians in 2009, the LP Florida is being run by GOP extremists out to destroy the party brand. They’re spending money the members designated for infrastructure and ignoring the party prohibition on spending funds for candidates who can raise funds themselves and are supposed to run by ‘petition only’ to build contacts. Most libertarians in Florida won’t go near the LP Florida.

Go to Overby’s site to read about how he wants a special tax on oil, a big government energy program, and a ‘fair tax’ of nearly 30% of your income with 0% corporate taxes. Some Libertarian. Shame on Cole for supporting this travesty.

Worse, the national LP has sent a letter asking people to send money to this guy. Wes Benedict the director seems intent on destroying state parties.
