Lianne Smith, British mother found guilty of murdering son and daugher
A jury has deliberated on the fate of Lianne Smith, who has admitting smothering her two chilren with a plastic bag in a hotel room back in 2010.
As the BBC describes, Lianne Smith, 45, originally from Tyneside, has admitted smothering Rebecca, five, and 11-month-old Daniel in Lloret de Mar in May 2010. The deaths happened a few days after Ms Smith’s partner, Martin Smith, was extradited to the UK on charges of sexually abusing her eldest daughter from another relationship. Her defense is seeking an acquittal, claiming she was “psychiatrically disturbed”.
The jury at the Provincial Court in Girona, northeast Spain, found the woman guilty of murder charges after deciding she was criminally responsible for the children’s deaths.
Daily Mail reports that the jury deliberated for eight hours and the jury foreman stated that the panel of seven men and two women believed Smith had been ‘fully conscious’ when she killed Rebecca, five, and baby Daniel, 11 months, that what she was doing was wrong.
She now faces a lengthy period behind bars in a Spanish prison.
The court heard yesterday that the two children were not fathered by Smith’s paedophile partner.
Smith looked furious when the shock DNA results were read out to the jury and denounced them as ‘mistaken’.
