Lexington County Sheriff’s Office arrest murder suspect Legrantt Nesbitt at Columbia Red Roof Inn after shooting at police
Lexington County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina arrested murder suspect Legrantt Nesbitt on Friday after a fire fight with deputies in a standoff at a Columbia area hotel.
Nesbitt, 54, got into an argument with a woman that deputies say he had an intimate relationship with. Officers say he choked her until she passed out, but came back later and shot her in the upper body several times.
The woman was able to escape from the room and call 911, and was taken to the hospital.
The incident at the Red Roof Inn off St. Andrews Road near Interstate 26 started after midday, around 12:45 p.m., involved SWAT and continued as Nesbitt shot at police until he was apprehended around 3:30 p.m., when they announced he was in custody.
Later department spokesperson Capt. Adam Myrick said officers arrived at the hotel at 10:30 a.m.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol helped Lexington deputies block off and create a perimeter around Berryhill Drive and Woodland Hills Road near the hotel.
Nesbitt was wanted by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
If convicted for the attempted murder and weapon charges against the woman he could go to prison for 35 years.
Nesbitt will be booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
