Large Dogs Need to Be Protected from the Elements as Well

Very often, when we hear of dog accessories and clothes, we think of those for small dogs. As a result, people with larger dogs often think there is no need for these types of clothes. While it is certainly true that larger breeds are better equipped to stay warm, they can still benefit from wearing dog sweaters or reflective vests.

Dog Sweaters for Large Dogs

It is very important that any sweater you purchase for a large dog is functional, meaning that it enhances their overall comfort. Your dog should only wear it when the weather is cold, therefore. While there are different designs available, the main feature of anything you purchase makes them feel comfortable. You should also check out which season the sweater is made for. Lightweight sweaters, for instance, should only be used on chilly spring and fall days. You won’t need them during summer, and they won’t be fit for purpose in winter.

During winter, when it gets really cold, a heavyweight sweater is what you need. If it is raining cats and dogs during spring or fall, you may also consider a heavyweight garment. If the weather is in between freezing cold, or wet, and just a tad chilly, then a medium sweater is the best option.

You may also not be aware of the fact that dogs’ skin is susceptible to damaging UV rays, particularly if they are a shorthaired bread. This is why you may also need a lightweight sweater during sunny days, reflecting the rays of the sun and protecting them. So yes, even if you have a big dog, you may need a sweater all year long.

Fashion for Large Dogs

It’s all very well getting sweaters for your dog to protect them, but you don’t want them to look ridiculous either. Luckily, there are plenty of fashionable options out there that will both protect your dog, and make them look amazing. One of the great things about these garments is that they attract attention, and dogs love nothing more than a bit of attention. And as a bonus to you, it will help with your dog’s socialization skills.

Should this be the first time you have purchased a sweater, your starting point should be measuring your dog’s size. Getting the right size is vital, because a sweater that is too small will cut off circulation, and one that is too large will not only not protect from the elements, but could also lead to your dog getting tangled or tripping. Either way means the safety and happiness of your canine friend is at risk.

The most important thing of all, however, is that you have to understand that dogs, by and large, are no longer bread to be outside animals. If you have a shorthaired dog and you live in a part of the world that experiences seasons, then it is likely that you will need some dog clothes for them to be comfortable all year long.
