Knowing How to Make Your First Sharepoint Site

It doesn’t matter if you’re new or a veteran, building a sharepoint site is useful for your organization. While it may be challenging at first, you’ll be rewarded with a website that can be used for multiple occasions. And we’ll give you some tips on how to fully utilize the opportunity.

Don’t Create a Site for the Entire Intranet

It’s hard to think that a hub site can provide global navigation for your organization’s intranet, but you shouldn’t think of it in this way. While you could make an hub site for your organization, we don’t recommend it, especially if you have a small organization.

Here are some reasons why it doesn’t make sense:

Context: One benefit to sharepoint sites is that you can easily search for other sites that are located on that hub. By restricting the search to a hub family, you can receive the benefit of having a more limited and relevant pool of search results.

One of the benefits you’ll get is the ability to find sales-related news on the sales hub. This helps your sales team members from different regions discover and access news and other information that’s related to sales.

One of the largest reasons why people use hub sites is because you can create a hub site for sales and then have sites from different regions associated with that web page.

Find out your Hubification Strategy

There are three important methods you can follow when building a sharepoint site.

  • Functional or organizational: For instance sales or HR.
  • Geographic (for instance, a function in geographies such as Australia or the U.S. sales. Note: If you want to create a sharepoint multiple geolocations for your company, the only sites that have the same geographical location is associated with hub sites.
  • Portfolio: For example, a portfolio is a group of projects that have all of the communication sites connected to a major inquisition or acquisition.

However, these three ideas are not fully exclusive. In fact, there are some websites that have hubs that can fulfill all three purposes. However, this is a good idea to look back and think of what works for your organization before you plan on hub-flying.

Since June 2018, you can have a maximum of 50 hub sites on your platform. But this isn’t a fast limitation as Microsoft has stated that their number will be increasing. However, you might not need a hub site for ever portfolio, geographic or functional site. Thus, you should think about your hubification strategy without worrying too much on the numbers.

Naming Conventions

Before building a sharepoint site in Office 365, you should do some planning about your website’s name. When you make a site, whether it’s a communication site or a team site, you have to make a landgrab for its URL name. The first site that’s created wins. If you don’t name conventions, you’ll have confusion on who gets to use the site’s URL name fully.

To conclude, we believe that making your sharepoint site is a great way to keep your consumers attracted to your company. With the multitude of sites in one place, they won’t have issues searching for what they need. Thus, make sure your sharepoint site is thoroughly made to improve your customer base further.
