Kevin Murphy previews ‘RiffTrax Live Godzilla’ and Mystery Science Theater 3000
Kevin Murphy and the Mystery Science Theater team have made fans laugh for years, but now Murphy, Michael J. Nelson and Bill Corbett take their style of fun to live audiences through Fathom Events. “Here, lizard lizard lizard,” may be the call for RiffTrax Live: Godzilla, a riffing of the popular film set to arrive later this month.
Muprhy spoke with Dispatch Radio in a new interview about the project, detailing the creative process. Each writer takes “twenty minute chunks of the film” and then come together which leads to the polishing phase of the script. He compares the film to a bad roommate – hilarious.
The live broadcast will be screened in nearly 650 select theaters across the country through Fathom Events for the digital broadcast. Murphy explains how this is cost effective and gives the audiences a great seat for the event.
Kevin reflects positively on the Mystery Science Theater days, voicing Tom Servo and the fandom that is spawned. He doesn’t sound interested (hopeful?) for a reunion event and seems fulfilled with the RiffTrx venue and the fans support through Kickstarter.
“Thanks to our many Kickstarter contributors we’re happy to be able to do the best giant lizard movie of the late 90’s!” said Nelson in the RiffTrax statement announcing the Godzilla event. “Because everything about it is big, we pledge to supersize the laughs as well.”
The 1998 film starred Matthew Broderick as Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (“the worm guy”), Maria Pitillo, Kevin Dunn, Jean Reno and Hank Azaria, for comic relief. This version of Godzilla was not well received by fans or critics and will be wide open for the quick wit and sharp sarcasm of the RiffTrax team.
Murphy also talks about “A Yar at the Movies: One Man’s Filmgoing Odyssey” which include him dressing as a num to view The Sound of Music and actually enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner at the theater.
Check out the full interview below.
The two screenings are Thursday, August 14, at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. CT and tape-delayed to 7:00 p.m. MT/ 8:00 p.m. PT, with a second showing on Tuesday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. local time.
