Kevin James Loibl identified as shooter in murder of singer Christina Grimmie
While singer Christina Grimmie met with fans after her show in central Florida, a man who walked up to her after the performance in Orlando, shooting and killing the former star of The Voice, police said.
Witnesses heard at least six shots following the show, which ended at 10 p.m. EDT.
“Her brother is a hero for saving and stopping him from not hurting anyone else,” Police Sgt. Wanda Miglio told a news conference.
Miglio reportedly said that it was unknown if Grimmie, 22, knew the suspect, and that authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord,” her publicist told E! News. “She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gunshot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning. Singer Adam Levine, who was on his team while she was a contestant on The Voice spoke out about the shooting death of Grimmie, saying he and his wife, model Behati Prinsloo, are “devastated.”
“Behati and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s tragic death. Our hearts go out to her family. Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon. This is yet another senseless act of extreme violence. I am left stunned and confused how these things can conceivably continue to happen in our world,” Levine said in the statement
