Kentucky Gov Matt Bevin under attack over ‘Abortion Andy’ attacks in re-election battle with Andy Beshear
Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin has attacks towards his Democrat opponent and current state Attorney General Andy Beshear’s pro-abortion stance and financial backing from the abortion lobby. In fact, Bevin’s running mate, Republican state Sen. Ralph Alvarado, dubbed Beshear “Abortion Andy” last month.

Bevin spoke with WYMT during a stop in the eastern part of the state. “I’m running against a guy in Attorney General Beshear who’s strongly pro-abortion,” Bevin said. “Not only strongly pro-abortion, some of his strongest financial supporters are the providers of abortions that remain here in Kentucky.”
“NARAL, which is the most proactive pro-abortion organization in America, Planned Parenthood, all these people have maxed out to him, they contribute to him, they do fundraisers and they knock on doors,” he continued. “I’m a pro-life individual, I have been my entire life. I’m blessed to be the father of nine children. Four of our children are adopted.”
Bevin also released an ad this week referencing the ongoing trial against the pro-life investigators who exposed Planned Parenthood’s fetal organ harvesting business, specifically the testimony of abortionists who acknowledged the practice of selling beating hearts or entire fetal heads.
“This is who Planned Parenthood is. They are a barbaric organization,” Bevin says in the ad. “They hand-picked Attorney General Beshear. He was the one in the Democrat primary they endorsed. They sent people to rally votes on his behalf. They continue to support him financially and with feet on the ground.”

Rewire published an article titled “Matt Bevin Ramps Up ‘Dangerous’ Abortion Rhetoric in Re-Election Bid” which throws support behind Beshear and the abortion industry, quoting NARAL.
“While Andy stands up for Kentuckians’ fundamental freedoms, Matt Bevin works in lock-step with extreme anti-choice politicians, including working to pass a devastating bill this year that criminalizes abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant,” Amanda Thayer, a spokesperson for NARAL, said in a statement. “That’s why NARAL has activated our members in Kentucky to support Andy’s campaign and make sure that Kentucky families have a governor who fights for them, not anti-choice extremists.”
Beshear campaign criticized the charged language Bevin used in his social media response. “Matt Bevin continues to use the type of violent language that can get people hurt, and he is now specifically requesting for people not to ‘hold your powder dry,’” Eric Hyers, Beshear’s campaign manager, said in a statement, noting that the comments came after a string of mass shootings.
The heated and “dangerous” rhetoric has been met with even greater heated or intense language.
Marcie Crim, executive director of the Kentucky Health Justice Network, said Bevin’s anti-abortion rhetoric is “dangerous” in several ways. “It gives people permission to use similar language to discount” the experiences of people who have had abortions, Crim told Rewire.News. Crim said she has seen anti-choice state lawmakers follow the governor’s lead and “some of the language that he uses [is] reflected in the language of some of these bills” restricting abortion.
“It’s dangerous because they’re creating laws that are creating barriers for people who are trying to access abortion care,” Crim said.
