Kendrick Johnson death update: Family headed to capitol, protesting and calling for answers

January will be one year that the teen in Georgia was found dead, rolled up inside of a wrestling mat inside of his school’s gym.

One year and a ton of questions have the family still seeking answers to how Kendrick Johnson died and who was responsible.

Kendrick JohnsonThe teen’s family traveled to Ebenezer Baptist Church Sunday, joined by the congregation to stand alongside Kenneth and Jacqueline Johnson, who lost their 17-year-old son nearly a year ago.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation ruled his death an accident.

“The reputation of our state is on the line, and we cannot allow Georgia to have a moral and ethical black eye,” said Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church Raphael Warnock.

The family and supporters said they continue to seek the truth and justice for him, and will take their plea to the state Capitol steps Wednesday.

“Our message at that rally and our message that afternoon is simple and very clear: The lives of all of our children matter,” Warnock said.

“They do not accept the Sheriff’s conclusion that their 17-year-old child, a gifted athlete in three sports, climbed in to a wrestling mat, got stuck trying to get a sneaker and stopped breathing,” said attorney Benjamin Crump.

The Johnson family will stand before the state capital surrounded by members of the Ebenezer congregation, attorneys, Al Sharpton and more on Wednesday.

They’re questioning how Johnson’s death investigation was handled, from the autopsy to limited security footage released last month.

A church is seeking closure for a mother who has been waiting almost a year now to know, for sure, how her son died.

“We have no answers. The only thing we ever asked was the truth,” Jacqueline Johnson said.
