Karen Fukuhara talks ‘Suicide Squad,’ doing her own stunts, Jared Leto always being Joker
While previewing the new Suicide Squad film, Karen Fukuhara was profiled by W Magazine and gave readers insight into her character, getting into acting and life on set. Karen reflected on life in Los Angeles, getting into the business with a role on Disney interviewing stars.
“Coming from a first-generation immigrant family, we just didn’t know how to go about the business,” said Fukuhara in the new interview, published online Monday. “We didn’t even know what an agent was.”
Fukuhara plays Katana, a dangerous DC Comics’ villain and director David Ayer tapped into her karate roots: “I only got into it(karate) because my little brother started karate, and my mother wanted me to babysit him…He was a troublemaker in class—and thank god for that now.”
Karen talked about life on set and confessed to doing her own stunts…well, mostly.
“I even ran on top of a car in the pouring rain,” Fukuhara said, talking about “mastering the art of swordfighting” to at least avoid “accidentally taking off Margot Robbie’s head with an errant swing of the blade. “Margot’s very tough, but yeah that would’ve been bad.”
Robbie plays Harley Quinn alongside the all-star cast: Will Smith stars as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Scott Eastwood and David Harbour in an unknown role.
“Will set the family vibe on the film,” Fukuhara said. “He created this gym on set so we could train when we weren’t shooting. And he would bring coffee and snack trucks to set.”
It’s Leto’s Joker which is still very intriguing for fans and Karen just met Leto….well sort of.
“To be honest, I didn’t meet Jared until Comic Con this year,” Fukuhara said. “Because every time I saw him on set he introduced himself as the Joker! I would try to say hi to him as Karen, and he would come at me with full Joker.”
She laughed.
“It was weird every single time.”
