Kareem Abdul-Jabbar defends Sharia Law, ‘is for ruling an Islamic State’
In an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiroma on “Sunday Morning Futures,” former NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said the notion that Shariah law endorses killing homosexuals, rape and making women subservient to men is “crazy” and insisted that critics of Shariah are out to make Muslims “the villain.” Check out the clip below.
“We know that Shariah law means killing homosexuals, women are subservient to men,” Bartiroma said. “Tell me about Shariah law.”
“Islam does not OK the things that you just mentioned, killing people, rape, all of these things that have been associated now with Shariah law. That’s crazy,” Kareem said.
“None of the people that have that criticism of Shariah law have checked out the law. Because it’s not even for non-Muslims. Shariah law is for the ruling of an Islamic state. So Shariah law could never apply here in America because America is a very diverse place. So they’ve got it all wrong. They don’t know what the law states, actually. And they want to distort it in order to make Muslims the villain. And there’s enough real villainy going on without people inventing it.”
Sharia law is Islam’s legal system. It is derived from both the Koran, Islam’s central text, and fatwas – the rulings of Islamic scholars: literally meaning “the clear, well-trodden path to water.”
The BBC notes that:
Sharia law divides offences into two general categories: “hadd” offences, which are serious crimes with set penalties, and “tazir” crimes, where the punishment is left to the discretion of the judge.
Hadd offences include theft, which can be punishable by amputating the offender’s hand, and adultery, which can carry the penalty of death by stoning.
More:
Not all Muslim countries adopt or enforce such punishments for hadd offences, and polling suggests attitudes of Muslims to harsh penalties for such offences vary widely.
Tariq Ramadan, a prominent Muslim thinker in Europe, has called for a moratorium on corporal punishment, stoning and the death penalty in the Muslim world.
He argues that the conditions under which such penalties would be legal are almost impossible to re-establish in today’s world.
