Kane County health officials investigate Aliano’s Ristorante in Batavia- restaurant linked to salmonella outbreak
Aliano’s Ristorante in downtown Batavia, Illinois remained closed today as the Kane County Health Department (KCHD) proceeds with its investigation of six cases of salmonella that could be linked to the restaurant.
The Italian restaurant located at 90 N. Island Ave. in Batavia has been voluntarily closed since Friday while health officials perform their investigation.
KCHD spokesperson, Tom Schlueter said, “The restaurant can’t open until it is safe to do so”, according to a report in Kane County Chronicle.
Schlueter went on to say there have been six cases of salmonella with common links that go back to Aliano’s, one individual required hospitalization for their illness. The person has since been discharged from the hospital.
The investigation into the outbreak began Friday, which will include looking into what food the customers ate and whether they had dined at any other restaurant in the area. In addition, restaurant staff will be tested for the food-borne pathogen.
Schlueter said there were 108 cases of salmonella in the county in 2011 and 85 cases in 2010. He said this year there have been 66 reports of salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
