‘Jungle Cruise’ wraps and director Jaume Collet-Serra may direct ‘Black Adam’
Observer is reporting that Warner Bros. and New Line are in advanced negotiations with Jaume Collet-Serra to direct their upcoming superhero movie, Black Adam, which will star Dwayne Johnson (Hobbs & Shaw) as titular anti-hero.
The news has now been verified by Variety adding that the film is currently a priority for both studios following the success of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam!, which starred Zachary Levi (Chuck) in the lead role. Getting The Rock into the mix will be huge for fans.
There were plenty of rumors that Black Adam was originally supposed to debut in Shazam!, but the producers decided against it prior to filming and opted instead to introduce the two characters in separate solo films before bringing them together.
In April, Johnson explained: “This project…we had some challenges and we took a risk. As we were developing this a few years ago, the challenges and the struggles that we were having and that was gnawing at my gut [was] that we were trying to tell two origin stories in one script…. The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you’re trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC Universe—two very important characters—trying to tell both their origin stories in one script. I didn’t think it was working…. We should start shooting [Black Adam] in about a year.”
Collet-Serra is best known for helming Liam Neeson-led action films, including Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. He also directed Blake Lively (A Simple Favor) in The Shallows and recently completed Disney’s Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, Edge of Tomorrow) – the latter putting him on WB’s radar.
Johnson and Collet-Serra’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ will be released next year, on July 24, 2020.
The Jungle Cruise wraps
The Rock teased the end of production on social media.
“If Emily Blunt’s looks could kill.
Ladies and gents, that’s an OFFICIAL WRAP of production for our DISNEY’S JUNGLE CRUISE.
To our hard working and brilliant crew and filmmakers – THANK YOU for your commitment and talent in making something great for our audience.
THANK YOU to our partner & leader of global family entertainment, the WALT DISNEY CO for the trust you’ve placed in our hands for our beloved, timeless, iconic Disney park ride known as JUNGLE CRUISE. And finally, a heartfelt MAHALO to my one and only co-star, Emily Blunt.
You play the female version of INDIANA JONES brilliantly with relentless ambition to find the one, elusive magical thing that could change humanity for the better – forever.
Unfortunately, for you there’s no other skipper that knows the Amazon River like I do and all I care about is my money, my liquor and my cat.
Good luck lady in trying to change the world ~ and not falling for my charm.
So much fun making this film and we can’t wait to take you all on this EPIC adventure.
That’s a wrap!
And I’ll see ya down the road.”
Disney’s Jungle Cruise is based on the iconic Disney theme park attraction of the same name. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, Edgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.
