Julious Johnson identified as driver who struck and killed Florida crossing guard, Doug Carey
Police have increased patrols and coverage near an intersection where a tragic accident left the crossing guard dead and two children injured. Douglas Carey was a retired police officer and police now detail the accident and identify the driver.
Julious Johnson, 28, was speeding in his Cadillac when he collided with another vehicle which struck the 70-year-old crossing guard. Police added to The Global Dispatch that Johnson fled the scene, passing off one of his daughters (the injured 4-year-old) “to a bystander” and fled on foot.
Johnson returned to the car, retrieve some items and fled again, the source added. He was caught a short time later and now faces several charges including aggravated child neglect, leaving the scene, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, a red light violation, possession of marijuana and possibly vehicular manslaughter.
Police say Johnson has been arrested 17 times before.
Carey, a former police officer with the Clearwater Police Department, retired in 1987 after nearly 19 years with the department.
“Here’s a guy who spent 20 years to dedicated service. He comes back to help these kids cross this intersection, and he gets killed because some guy ran a red light,” said Clearwater police Chief Tony Holloway. “We handle these (crashes) every day, but when it’s one of your own, it hits you a little bit harder.”
“He comes back to work to help kids cross the intersection and gets killed because some guy ran a red light,” Holloway added.
