Joshua Hakken, Florida man who took kids and fled to Cuba, deemed insane
The Florida man who abducted his children and sailed to Cuba in 2013 will undergo treatment for a mental illness before standing trial.
Joshua Hakken and his wife abducted their two sons (Cole and Chase), ages 2 and 4, after losing parental rights, then sailed to Cuba before being detained and returned to Tampa.
The ruling was made by Circuit Judge Chet Tharpe, who also said he would examine psychological reports on Sharyn Hakken, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Prosecutors say Joshua Hakken thought the federal government was targeting him and claimed to have uncovered a top secret scheme to poison Americans with airplane chemicals.
He was also allegedly paranoid about living in the US. and said the government was trying to hack his computers — and he had asked 11 countries for asylum.
Hakken lost custody of his sons last year after a drug possession arrest in Louisiana, and he later tried to take them from a foster home at gunpoint, authorities have said.
The boys now safely live with their maternal grandparents who were granted permanent custody.
