Joseph DeAngelo shocked Williamsport residents, floating on the river like a ‘corpse’
“He’s not quite dead yet,” may be been the Monty Python inspired response to Joseph DeAngelo emerging from the Susquehanna River after authorities responded to a report that a corpse was floating down the river.
Sue Hubbard was on her bike, riding alongside the river near Williamsport, Pennsylvania, when she saw a ‘dead body floating in the river,’ so she called the police.
The police arrived to find DeAngelo floating face up, wearing a life jacket and appearing to be motionless. WNEP-TV reported on the body floating face up in a life jacket
A forensic squad began to investigate a drowning and Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. was also called, and he described the man as “bobbing up and down in the water” as if he was dead. Suddenly, the man – DeAngelo—scared everyone when he sat up.
According to DeAngelo, he was just enjoying the tranquility of the river, completely unaware that he had horrified frightened everyone on shore.
“I saw him down there all by myself, second thought was oh my gosh,” said Hubbard.
