Jonathan Stenberg, accused Ned Kelly killer, caught after six day manhunt
Alleged killer Jonathon Andrew Stenberg is in custody after Australian police captured the heavily armed fugitive hiding in dense bushland.
Deputy Commissioner Shayne Maines said Stenberg, who has been the subject of a huge man-hunt since last Tuesday, was carrying two loaded handguns and had a rifle when he was apprehended on Sunday.
As originally reported, Stenberg is wanted in the horrific murder of Ned Kelly, whose body was found decapitated.
Stenberg surrendered quietly when police discovered his well-camouflaged campsite, Maines said.
“Mr Stenberg was caught in one of the search zones … by tactical police who were conducting a sweep of the bush,” he added, as reported by the Herald Sun.
Mr Kelly’s head has not been found.
Stenberg was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital for medical assessment, and is expected to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court today for an extradition hearing.
