Joe Hundley, man who slapped a toddler on airplane, gets 8 months in jail
The man who slapped a toddler on an airplane trip will now have a few months to think about his actions after a judge sentenced him to eight months in prison.
Joe Hundley pleaded guilty in October for striking a 19-month old toddler during a Delta trip. Hundley reportedly “reeked of alcohol” and was seen consuming two double vodkas aboard the Atlanta-bound flight.
“You don’t have the right to raise your hand against another human being,” the judge said, noting that the man had a previous assault conviction and was on probation for drunken driving at the time.
The man apologized in court to the child’s mother for the incident last February.
“I’m very sorry,” he told the child’s mother during the court hearing in Atlanta. “I made the most terrible day in my life much worse for myself and others.”
Federal authorities charged Hundley with simple assault, but battled being charged with a hate crime for his alleged statements before hitting the child.
