JK Rowling confirms ‘Fantastic Beasts’ will be a trilogy

While it was first rumored as such, J.K. Rowling has confirmed for fans that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be adapted into not just one feature film, but a trilogy of them.

Rowling took to social media to clear up any misunderstandings, particularly the confusion regarding her upcoming stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” It seems some miscommunication led fans to believe that the two-part play, which can only be seen this summer at London’s Palace Theatre, will be making its way to movie screens. As of this writing, there are no such plans for that adaptation, at least not that Rowling or Warner Bros. are willing to divulge.

Here’s what Rowling had to say:

She also confirmed it will be a non-musical, two-part sequel play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”:

Director David Yates returns to the franchise to helm the new feature set set some 70 years before Harry Potter set foot in Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts will be the first of three films. The first, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Porpentia Goldstein, and Colin Farrell as Percival Graves, will open November 18th, with the others following in 2018 and 2020.
