Jeremy Irons talks ‘Batman v Superman’ role as a ‘different’ Alfred
Empire’s new Batman v Superman issue includes comments from Jeremy Irons, the British actor who brings a fresh new take to the role of Batman’s butler and father figure, Alfred.
“I knew we would be finding a different angle on Alfred,” Irons told Empire. “So I thought of him as my own.”
It’s clear that the veteran British actor’s incarnation will be quite different from the Michael Caine/Michael Gough versions. “Alfred has lived longer than Bruce, and so perhaps has a clearer perspective on life,” Irons, now 67, said of the relationship with Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne.
“As well as having been in loco parentis to Bruce,” Irons continued, “his only remit in life is to protect him. And, as those of us who have raised children, let alone Batmen, will know, that is quite a wide remit.”
Irons revealed his Alfred does not take residence in Wayne Manor, which is apparently been destroyed, but instead, resides a sleek lakeside residence; and this Alfred promises to be more “hands-on”, with a special-ops background hinted at.
“He’s a man who can actually do anything if he has to,” says Irons.

The Man of Steel (Henry Cavill) and the Dark Knight (Affleck) square off in Dawn of Justice, which introduces Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and promises a cameo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Remember Jena Malone and Scoot McNairy’s role are still under wraps (rumored to be Barbara Gordon and Jimmy Olsen) so there’s still plenty to learn.
Man of Steel director Zack Snyder returns and directs Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from a script by Chris Terrio and David Goyer.
Dawn of Justice also stars Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives March 25th.
