James Gunn ‘Suicide Squad’ cast breakdown: From Idris Elba to John Cena to Micheal Rooker to Nathan Fillion
Director James Gunn revealed ‘The Suicide Squad 2’ full cast listing on Twitter which includes 24 stars, according to Variety.
He tweeted an image of names with a message “Don’t get too attached.”
Gunn also confirmed that Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis will all reprise the roles they played in the first film.
New cast members include Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, John Cena, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior. Cena will play Peacemaker.
Elba was thought to be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot, but Variety broke the news in April that Deadshot will not be in The Suicide Squad, and Elba will instead be playing a new character with a daughter portrayed by A Wrinkle in Time actress Storm Reid.
Dastmalchian will be playing Polka-Dot Man, confirmed to have a key role in the film.
Reuniting with Gunn will also be Michael Rooker, who became a fan favorite as Yondu in the two Guardians of the Galaxy films.
The director’s brother, Sean Gunn is on the cast list, known for playing Ravager member Kraglin and performed all of Rocket’s movements and lines on set.
Steve Agee has also worked with Gunn and has a role, presumed to be a voice role, possibly even King Shark.
Another name exciting fans is Nathan Fillion of Firefly and Castle fame, a big hitter among comic book and science fiction fans.
Another big name is Thor: Ragnarok director Waititi, who voiced Korg in that film, so it’s expected to hear Taika rather than see him on screen.
Gunn and Warner Bros. still have not revealed which characters many of the actors will be playing.
Digger Harkness, a.k.a. Captain Boomerang, will be back, played by Jai Courtney.

Joaquín Cosio voiced Scorpion in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and has a long list of acting credits to his name, including Quantum of Solace, Narcos: Mexico, and The Strain.
Mayling Ng is a black belt Martial Artist and Fitness Champion who represented Singapore in the USA in 2013 who appeared in Wonder Woman as the Amazon leaping off that cliff in all the trailers.
Flula Borg is a German comedian whose acting credits are voiceover roles in Archer, Tangled: The Series as well as Disney movie Ralph Breaks the Internet. Borgwill play a “love interest” to one of the members of the team, so expect a comedic role/presence.
Juan Diego Botto is an Argentinian actor and Alice Braga hails from Brazil with an impressive resume of films: I Am Legend, Predators, and Elysium. Braga is also set to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes in The New Mutants.
Tinashe Kajese has a role, likely a love interest to Elba (but who knows) and may point to a Bronze Tiger role for Elba.
Jennifer Holland is James Gunn’s real-life girlfriend, with acting credits including American Horror Story, Brightburn, and Rush Hour.
Julio Ruiz has appeared in Zoo, Preacher, and S.W.A.T. Ruiz is a large man, so a role as an antagonist would be the likely guess at this point.
Courtney talked about returning, saying that “It’s kind of funny that we’re getting it up to go again, and there’s a bunch of new people and a bunch of old people, too.”
“I loved David [Ayer], I loved working with David, I’d work with David again in a heartbeat,” Courtney explained. “But Gunn, too, is quite prolific and really, obviously, does know what he’s doing. I’m excited to see what he brings to it. It’s going to be tonally different but very cool as well. The world has evolved from where we were at that point; he’s going to have his own take on it, and it’s going to be great.”
