James Gunn confirms ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ for 2020

Fans are still pretty much in the dark about the MCU after Avengers 4, director James Gunn confirmed at least one project: the third Guardians of the Galaxy, which will come to theaters in 2020.

Writer/director James Gunn had already been confirmed to reprise his duties for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 and the filmmaker revealed in a heartfelt Facebook post that he’d be spending “the next three years” creating the third film in the Guardians franchise.

That seemed to indicate the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 release date as sometime in 2020, but Marvel Studios still hasn’t confirmed a specific date.

Gunn took to Twitter over the weekend and confirmed once again that Guardians 3 will hit theaters in 2020: “Coming in 2020. https://twitter.com/73be1e652c3046c/status/952348917865308160 …  @JamesGunn

Marvel Studios has three release dates staked out in 2020 for untitled films: May 1, 2020, August 7, 2020, November 6, 2020.

There is little doubt that the May 1 date will be GOTG 3.

Guardians 2 open the first week of May, earning $863.7 million, but an August release date would be something of a “throwback” as the first Guardians debuted in the first weekend of August.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be part of a “new” MCU that could look quite different, following the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4. Gone may be Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., at least as regulars, but expect the Guardians still all be there: Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper (voicing Rocket) and Vin Diesel as Groot.

Karen Gillan as Nebula and Pom Klementieff as Mantis are likely as well.

GOTG 3 will likely pick up the Adam Warlock reference at the end of the previous film.
