Jai Courtney talks ‘Terminator Genisys’ and how Kyle Reese different than Michael Biehn
During the promotion for Insurgent, Jai Courtney looked ahead to his role in Terminator Genisys, playing Kyle Reese, a role that was played by Michael Biehn back in 1984’s original film. Talking with IGN, Courtney was asked about checking that portrayal for this role.
“I think only an idiot would closely watch a film from 1984 to get performance tips when you’re talking about a film that has come so far from that original film. We’re anchoring this film in the (James) Cameron world. It sets off from that world, but even though Arnold (Schwarzenegger) is reprising his role, but he won’t be doing the same thing. Doing the same thing would undermine what this franchise stands for in storytelling capabilities. You’re dealing with time travel, and things can change so much when you’re using that narrative.”
In fact, Courtney revealed that fans need to expect something different.
“Without giving you too much my Kyle Reese isn’t the Kyle Reese of Michael Biehn. He gave a great performance for what was necessary at the time but action movies are much different now than in 1984. [My Kyle Reese is] a soldier in a resistance army who goes into a different time. We’re taking it into a new direction, while keeping the skeleton of the established Terminator world,” he says.
