Italy reports first MERS coronavirus case, Morocco ‘rules out’ reported case
The Italian Health Ministry has reported the first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV ) in the country, according to a Ministry news release May 31.
According to health officials, the patient is a 45-year-old man Italian citizen of a foreign nationality who traveled to Jordan and stayed for 40 days. In addition, it is reported that one of his sons in Jordan were suffering from the flu.
He was admitted to a hospital in Tuscany with the symptoms of high fever, cough and signs of respiratory failure. He is currently hospitalized in isolation and is in good condition.
MERS-CoV was confirmed by the Institute of Health – Department of Infectious, Parasitic and Immune-Mediated.
The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation in close collaboration with the health authorities of the Region of Tuscany.
In Morocco Friday, The Ministry of Health denied media reports of “the detection of any Coronavirus infections in Morocco”. On May 29, Moroccan news source, Lakome.com reported the first case of MERS-CoV in the country in a UAE citizen.
However, Morocco World News reported Friday, “The Ministry of Health assures the public that the foreign man in question was a 67-year-old patient from the United Arab Emirates, who was hospitalized on May 27 in a hospital in Rabat due to mere respiratory issues,” affirmed the ministry in a statement.
A virological investigation at the Pasteur Institute in Morocco, on May 29, has ruled out any claim of a Coronavirus infection.
Globally, from September 2012 to May 31, WHO has been informed of a total of 50 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including 30 deaths.
This does not include the Italian case.
