‘Iron Man 3’ opens with second biggest box office total of all-time at $175.3 million, ‘Mud’ success absent from lists

The opening was going to be big, but how big was the key. Now the estimates are in  and Iron Man 3 finishes a strong second,  but well short of The Avengers opening over $200 million last summer.

In just three days, Iron Man 3 earned $175.3 million in the US and $504.8 internationally, which began on April 24, to bring the worldwide total to over $680 million.

After just one weekend in the US, the third Robert Downey Jr led film is #58 all-time on the worldwide box office list.

Avengers is still the only film to open over $200 million on the first weekend, earning $207.4 million a year ago. The final Harry Potter film, Deathly Hallows part 2 was second at $169.1 million, but slides to number 3.

See the list below

  Title Opening
1.   The Avengers   $207.4
2.   Iron Man 3   $175.3
3.   Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part 2   $169.1
4.   The Dark Knight Rises   $160.8
5.   The Dark Knight   $158.4

Pain & Gain dropped to number two and the Jackie Robinson bio, 42, was number three. It’s noteworthy to mention the strong turnout for Mud, a drama starring Matthew McConaughey, which earned over $2.1 million on less than 600 screens. It’s also worth mentioning that the film is absent from some lists:

Forbes, nothing; several sites talk Iron Man and nothing else and Rope of Silicon uses the correct list, but fails to mention Mud‘s success, talking about the early screening totals for Iceman.
