‘Iron Man 3’ Comic-con confirms Mandarin, shows clip as Downey Jr shines
Robert Downey Jr entered Hall H to Luther Vandross and director Shane Black announcing: “He is Tony Stark.”
Marvel Studios presented a ton of updates for eager fans and “Iron Man 3” news was center stage. Downey Jr donned an Iron Man glove on his right hand an replied to Black stating: “I’m an a**hole…A rich a**hole.”
Former director Jon Favreau (who stays on as a producer) and Don Cheadle were onhand to featured a short clip and a brief peek of Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin.
The Mandarin is the most powerful and formidable Iron Man villain, who is so powerful that his martial arts attacks can destroy (or atleast split open) Iron Man’s armor.
“People call me a terrorist,” the British Kingsley’s powerful voice intoned. “I consider myself a teacher. Lesson No. 1: Heroes — there is no such thing.”
“As you cry out for mercy,” Kingsley says in the voiceover, “you will be silenced.” Then the money shot of a hooded Kingsley follows, looking menacing with his 10 rings.
Don Cheadle stated the film is darker, describing it as grittier.
“It’s a little grittier. To me when you read the script, it kind of feels more like the first one in terms of the level of threat that they’re dealing with, that feels like it could be kind of a world war,” he said.
Black takes over for Favreau, who is confirmed to return as Happy Hogan, but turns to other projects.
“I feel like a proud grandfather who doesn’t have to change the diapers but gets to play with the baby,” Favreau said.
“Iron Man 3” is part of Marvel Studios’ Phase Two and the studio revealed new logos and titles for the upcoming films.
Over 6,000 fans packed the Hall to hear the latest from Marvel Studios and even see the “Ant-Man” test footage presented by Edgar Wright.
“Iron Man 3” will also feature newcomers Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, along with the return of Gwyneth Paltrow as Stark’s assistant/love interest Pepper Potts, Cheadle as James Rhodes and Favreau.
“Iron Man 3” arrives in theaters May, 2013.
