Indonesia Police Arrests Terrorists Ahead of Plotted Attacks

(International Christian Concern) –Over the last weekend, the anti-terror squad of the Indonesian police arrested several and killed two terrorists belonging to ISIS-linked local group, weeks before their plotted suicide bombing attacks on May 22.

According to national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo, Special Detachment 88, the anti-terror squad captured the eight alleged terrorists between last Thursday and Sunday. Some of them were bomb-makers based in the outskirts of Jakarta, Lampung province and North Sulawesi province. One militant died of gunshot wounds and the other died after blowing up himself to avoid capture in the raid in Bekasi, near capital Jakarta, on May 4.

They had planned to disguise themselves as protestors during the May 22 planned rally for the presidential election results announcement, aiming to create chaos. Also targeting law enforcement on duty, they loaded up high-explosive bombs in their hiding places.

“They rented a house a few weeks ago and planned to launch an attack soon. But police intelligence discovered them before they executed the plan,” Prasetyo said. He added that the strikes were aimed at encouraging other militants’ cells in other areas to stage similar attacks.

The Islamic State-linked Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) has launched several bombing attacks against churches, police stations, and in public space. Though disbanded by the government last July, JAD still has about 34,000 members across Indonesia. The authorities should increase security at churches, temples and police stations given the active status of JAD cells and the militants usually retaliate when their members are killed or arrested.
