India: Recent rapes not only draws reactions on the streets of New Delhi, but also on social media and from Indians abroad

The recent brutal and tragic rapes and subsequent deaths of two young women  in India this has brought out thousands in protest of not only the crimes, but also of how the police, the government and Indian society in general has dealt with this horrible issue.

One case involved a 23-year-old New Delhi student who was assaulted by a group of men on a bus, beaten with an iron rod, stripped and eventually thrown off the bus after the torturous crime. She was being treated in India for her injuries initially then transferred to a Singapore hospital, where she succumbed to her internal injuries today.

The other tragic case involved a 17-year-old from the northern province of Punjab. She was gang-raped during the Hindu festival of Diwali on November 13. However, a formal case wasn’t registered by police until 14 days later. Village elders pressured the teen victim to drop the case. On Wednesday, she left a suicide note and killed herself by drinking poison.

It’s not only on the streets of New Delhi and Punjab, the two places where these crimes occurred, where Indians are expressing their outrage and concern, but also on social media and Indians living abroad.

The Twitter account, #RIPNirbhaya, the symbolic name given to the 23-year-old New Delhi student by The Times of India, has been flowing with tweets about the rape, here is a small sample:

@sonamakapoor tweeted- “Please don’t let her tragic death be in vain. RIP nirbhaya”

@riya043 was critical of the system–“She didn’t die of a ‘multi organ failure’ but by a ‘MultiSystemFailure’….RIP #Nirbhaya”

While @Sandeep2009 wanted justice“If the Girl was sent to Singapore 4 “BETTER TREATMENT” then Rapists should be sent to Saudi Arabia for “BETTER JUSTICE” RIP#Nirbhaya”

On the India Facebook page, somebody posted the following:

To all guys in India – When you get together on the road and form a group and a friend makes a lewd comment on any girl, stop him. Ask him to think what if the girl was his sister or mother and someone else did that. Never do it yourself!

To all men and women, boo when such scenes where men stalk, comment and eve-teasing women are shown in movies and demand the cinema theatre to cut it. Don’t ever tolerate these simple scenes and “item songs”. No woman is an “item”, no girl is a thing to evaluate & pass comments on.

Indians living and studying overseas are also reacting to the horrible crimes in their home country.

Arunima Murgai, an Indian student living and studying in the U.K. told The Global Dispatch that the gang-rape cases have “left us all in horror”.

“It’s a black day for Indians all over the world. In spite of being hundreds of miles away from home the pain that all Indian students in the UK are feeling is no less”, she says.

Arunima, like many Indians, is not happy with the Indian government response saying, “the government seems to be uninvolved and aloof”.

How society, particularly men, look at women needs to change dramatically in her opinion.

“The men of this nation are in dire need of a change in their social attitude and behavior towards women. Women are often seen as objects of sex and pleasure.

“Failure to deliver strict laws and punishment to rapists has led to a great increase in the number of rape cases every year. A fundamental change in the social outlook of men backed up my stringent laws is needed to bring about a change in this situation.”

Riddhima Mohan, an Indian student living in Paris, and a creator of a petition demanding for severe penalties for rapists told The Global Dispatch, “Indians in Paris are very shocked by the crime and the death of the victim. Living in France, we have enjoyed a certain sense of security and it’s very alarming to see that women in India don’t even enjoy 1/10 of the security and liberty we have here.”

She states that Indian police and government are very corrupt, resulting in the indifferent and irresponsible way they react to these heinous crimes.

Riddhima feels India is changing for the worse as far as the treatment of women. “We feel we are loosing our culture. Everyday, a new rape case is reported. But how many of them go unnoticed? Or how many women are compelled to keep silence?”, she asks.

There is a huge problem in the Indian society. Women and even children are not at all safe, especially in Delhi, “rape capital of India” as everyone calls it. What is even more scaring is that very soon, there will be more men than women in India. If the same “trend” continues, then what will happen to our women ?”

Similar words were expressed by a New York Times editorial Saturday:

This reprehensible crime (writing about the New Delhi case) reflects an alarming trend in India, which basks in its success as a growing business and technological mecca but tolerates shocking abuse of women. Rape cases have increased at an alarming rate, roughly 25 percent in six years. New Delhi recorded 572 rapes in 2011; that total is up 17 percent this year.

And those are just the reported cases. Many victims, shamed into silence and callously disregarded by a male-dominated power structure, never go to the authorities to seek justice. Women are routinely blamed for inciting the violence against them.

From Paris. Riddhima  has taken action. She has created a petition demanding more severe punishment for these crimes. Although she acknowledges that the effort is primarily symbolic, she says, “We want Indians in India to know they have all our support and that we will fight with them even though we are far away.”

Specifically, her petition on causes.com calls for:

  • Severe punishment to rapists: Provision for Death penalty!,
  • Rapes should be made a non-bailable offence, castration compulsory,
  • Minimum life sentence with no pardon,
  • Speedy justice to victims: Fast track courts, dignified justice and rehabilitation and,
  • Better crime prevention: Sex offenders registry, more police patrols, educational programs in schools

You can support the cause by signing the petition here.

Fantastic article from the Global Dispatch. This “angle” id by far one of the best I have read. Keep up the good work.

  7. Satish Chandra says:

DECEMBER 29, 2012: RAW has used the gang rape of the 23-year old Delhi girl and countrywide outrage to divert attention from my press releases this month about the “Anglo-American enforcement of their ownership of India”, from the killing of over ten million Indians in just the ten years after 1857 by the British to enforce their will to the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan to drone attacks on Pakistan to the trafficking of Indian children to be used as food — RAWsTraffickingOfIndianChildrenDOTblogspotDOTcom — and the total possession and rape of India by the Anglo-Americans and their white friends in economic, military and all spheres with CIA’s rule over India via RAW that I have described at WhatYouShouldKnowAboutRAWDOTblogspotDOTcom. Like keeping Indians and Pakistanis fighting each other rather than their white oppressors, this is meant to keep Indians focused on rapes of Indians by Indians and not on their incomparably more violent rape and domination by the white countries and all the Indians participating in this RAW-sponsored event are participating in the enforcement of Anglo-American ownership of India, in the rape of India. JoinIndiaWarOfIndependenceDOTblogspotDOTcom

In service of its white masters RAW has committed innumerable terrorist acts in India taking part even in the Mumbai attack of 2008, carried out train accidents killing hundreds in each incident, sabotage of India’s defence equipment, spreading AIDS in India to provide the white countries a population of guinea pigs for vaccine development, murders including those of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, etc., etc. The minor who has been arrested at first was reported to have assaulted only the victim’s male friend but not taken part in the rape but later was assigned the responsibility for, by himself, having mutilated her intestines and other internal organs with an iron rod, because a minor can get away with confinement in a juvenile facility for a couple of years no matter what the crime. These may have been RAW operatives who committed the crime. There were no reports of the serious injuries to the victim’s internal organs until about two days after she had been admitted to the hospital. The injuries to her internal organs may have been inflicted on her by a member of the hospital staff at RAW’s behest, even under the pretext of doing surgery, or by a RAW operative who gained access to her after she had been admitted to the hospital.
