‘Independence Day’ sequel move back to 2016, no word on Will Smith returning
The sequel to the blockbuster by Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day will be pushed back a year.
Fox had initially planned to launch the film on July 3, 2015, but has pushed the film back by nearly a year, into a new slot on July 1, 2016.
The film will open on the first to take advantage of a long weekend in 2016, with the fourth landing on a Monday.
There is still no insight into whether Will Smith will be included in the film or not and the studio is said to have one script with Smith and one without.
Actor Michael B. Jordan is rumored to be attached to the film which allegedly centers on the children of the original characters from the first film.
“The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back,” Emmerich said about the film.
White House Down writer-producer James Vanderbilt was hired for the rewrite and previously told EW. “And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”
So just to be clear, Independence Day 2 will arrive in theaters July 1, 2016.
