Importance of Achieving a Balanced Approach to Exercise During Inpatient Anorexia Treatment

Clients with eating disorders often tend to take a drastic approach to self-care by excessively exercising on a daily basis. An unhealthy approach to exercise can quickly turn into a compulsion and reinforce eating disorder symptoms. In very little time, the urge to compulsively exercise can start to impact the quality of life of the patient. The exercise routines can take up a large amount of time and effort or otherwise adversely affect the mental health of the patient. Exercise routines must remain balanced and appropriate for the individual’s needs to support a fully recovered lifestyle. Without a sense of balance, clients can end up with an unhealthy relationship with exercise and even lower self-esteem than before. People with eating disorders may even start to use exercise as a justification to continue with their disordered thoughts and habits.

Poor exercise habits can lead to compulsive thoughts, distress about missed sessions and a dip in self-confidence, especially when compounded by eating disorder symptoms. In many cases, excessive exercise often leads to worse eating habits and an overall poor quality of life for the patient. Health problems associated with poor exercise habits and eating disorders include sprains and strains, bone fractures, dehydration and vitamin deficiencies. While in an inpatient anorexia treatment program, clients must learn about exercise and how to best integrate it into their daily lives to prevent these issues and jumpstart the eating disorder recovery process.

How Eating Disorder Inpatient Programs Promote a Balance Approach to Exercise

An effective inpatient eating disorder treatment program will help clients restructure their thoughts and feelings about exercise to create positive connections. As the patient becomes recovered, exercise becomes about more than simply controlling calories and weight. Treatment center providers identify the individual needs of their clients and create an effective care program based on their findings. Clients receive a full evaluation to determine their overall exercise needs and ability to start a low-intensity program. Clients may need to go through other phases of the inpatient anorexia treatment process before reintroducing exercise into their lives. Clients can work up to higher intensity activities as their overall sense of wellness improves while becoming recovered.

Types of Exercise to Introduce During Eating Disorder Recovery

Although not all clients can integrate exercise into their daily routines at first, effective treatment centers have a gym onsite to support their clients’ progress in becoming recovered from their eating disorders. The onsite gym can support the start of various low to high-intensity exercises that support the health of the clients in the inpatient eating disorder treatment program.

As clients show their readiness for daily exercise routines, low-intensity exercises will be introduced first. Clients may have the opportunity to go on low-key nature walks or participate in dance classes to celebrate the natural movement of the body. Yoga and weight training are also great ways for people in eating disorder inpatient programs to reconnect their mind and body.

As clients work toward becoming recovered, they may have the opportunity to add high-intensity workouts, including running and swimming routines, to their week. Providers will carefully monitor their clients to determine if the exercise program offers a beneficial effect or impedes progress toward becoming fully recovered. Throughout this process, providers at inpatient treatment centers work with their clients to help them find the best level of exercise to use in planning and completing their workouts each week.

Clients will learn how to best integrate exercise into their daily lives to achieve balance in their self-care routines.
