How to start with Machine Learning?

Have you ever tried to open a fridge, TV, Microwave and other machines? You might be curious to know what exactly happens inside a machine! This is exactly what we term machine learning.

What Is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a program of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides your systems with the ability to automatically learn and improve the experience without being specifically programmed. It has the motive regarding the development of computer programs to access data and use it for learning.

It is the field of study that gives computers the capability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It is one of the most exciting technologies that one would have ever come across. As can be seen from the name, it gives the computer the power that makes it more similar to humans: Machine learning is generally being used today, or in many more places than one can expect.

Why Machine Learning Is Important?

Machine learning is a tactic of data analysis that drives analytical model building. It is a limb of artificial intelligence based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify patterns and make decisions with minimum human intervention.

Because of new computing technologies, machine learning today is not like the past. It was originated from pattern recognition and the theory that computers can learn without being programmed to perform specific tasks. The repetitive aspect of machine learning is important because as models are exposed to new data, they can adapt themselves independently. They learn from previous reckonings to produce reliable, repeatable decisions as well as great results. It’s a science that’s not new in the town, but one that has gained fresh popularity.

Assuring interest in machine learning is because of the same factors that have made data mining and Bayesian analysis more popular than ever. Let us pen down some points that explain well why machine learning is important for you: –

  •   Opportunities and challenges for machine learning in business

You will get help in procuring great opportunities for life that will enhance your career to a whole new level.

  •   Machine learning powers credit scoring

Credit scoring is a statistical analysis accomplished by lenders and financial institutions to access a person’s creditworthiness. Lenders use credit scoring, to decide on whether to outstretch or deny credit. With machine learning procedure you can learn the credit scoring and enhance your knowledge.

  •   Helps in formulating data-driven decisions

Data is the lifeblood of all businesses. Data-driven decisions are increasingly making the difference between keeping up with the motive of competition or even falling behind. Machine learning is the key to unlock the value of corporate and customer data and passing decisions that may keep a company ahead of the competition.

Steps to start with for machine learning

Machine Learning is all about applying statistics and computer science to data. You don’t need to be a professional programmer, a mathematician to learn Machine Learning, but to achieve mastery in it, one has to be good at maths, programming and have some knowledge about the domain.

Several programming languages provide Machine learning capabilities. But Python and R are some of the most commonly used languages.

1.    Learn Statistics for Machine Learning

It is a great thing to have some knowledge about statistics, especially the Bayesian probability, as it is important for many machine learning algorithms. And to learn the basics of statistics, you can sign up for descriptive statistics and inferential statistics courses offered.

2. ML Courses to Sharpen Your Knowledge

To build a strong machine learning foundation, try to gain as much knowledge and theory as possible for you. There are several machine learning courses available to learn about machine learning.

3. Putting Theory into Practice

Machine learning is more of an art, you can become good only by practicing. To achieve an advanced level, you need to spend a lot of time working on different machine learnings and deep learning problems. You can start with UCI Machine Learning Repo or Kaggle.

  •   UCI Machine Learning Repo: – This contains 429 vague datasets specially prelated for practicing machine learning. It has been broadly used by students, educators, and researchers all over the world as a primary source of machine learning data sets. You can search through it by task, industry, dataset, size and much more.
  •   Kaggle: – Kaggle is a great source of competitions and conferences for Machine learning actions and helps to get one started on practical machine learning. It is an active, engaging and competitive platform and is more famous for mobbing data science competition. Once you join Kaggle, don’t try to expect to win competitions, but look at them as an opportunity to gain real experience and mentoring from the community.

4. Build A Machine Learning Portfolio

Building a machine learning portfolio will go a long way in establishing how you can finish your projects. It will also prepare you with the confidence to take on more interesting projects as you apply your Machine Learning and represent your skills and capabilities to recruiters once you start looking for a job.

5. Master in Specific Area That Will Help You Score A Job

Since machine learning is a broader concept, it might be better to select a specific area of study and Masters can help in landing you at a job interview as well. If you are focused on a post-doctorate which is also a great idea, there are a few areas of application you can focus on.

And if you want to become technically strong, you need to increase your Neural Network knowledge with a course or free resources that talks about artificial neural networks and how they’re being used for machine learning, in some areas such as speech recognition, image segmentation, and object recognition.
