Research suggests that this disease is hereditary so if you have had parents with essential tremor there is a chance that you might have it too. While there is no way to halt the chance of you developing a tremor completely, there are small changes to your lifestyle which could reduce the impact essential tremor has on your life.

Cut Out Caffeine

While the cause of the condition is unknown,  essential tremor  presents as abnormal electrical brain activity in the thalamus, and this can be exacerbated by caffeine. If you are concerned about a tremor, you should make the switch to the caffeine-free life as soon as possible.

If you currently consume a lot, the initial switch might be unpleasant. However, in a short while, you will feel much better and more positive. Many places nowadays offer decaf alternatives to tea and coffee so you will have no trouble enjoying the beverages you love as you go out and about.

Switch Your Diet

Changing your diet to a Mediterranean diet is one of the latest suggestions for a healthy lifestyle. The Mediterranean diet is made up of vegetables, fruits, legumes, wholegrain cereals, fish, and low levels of dairy, meat, and poultry.

The Mediterranean diet is considered very healthy so it might be a good idea to adopt it even if you are not at risk of essential tremor. Eating food which is both delicious and good for you could even help you to lose weight and improve the condition of your heart and major organs if you approach the diet in the right way. Speak to a qualified dietician if you would like some more information about the right diet for you.

Low-impact Exercise

If you are not currently doing occasional low-impact exercise, you should think about incorporating some into your routine. It can be as simple as walking to nearby shops instead of hopping in the car. Little lifestyle changes like this will improve your overall health. Research has indicated that some light cardiovascular activity combined with the right diet will increase the number of antioxidants in your system while also improving your body’s ability to combat inflammation caused by certain food products. Both of these will put you in a better position to cope with essential tremor should you receive a diagnosis.

Yoga has many benefits and can improve your flexibility. You could also try swimming or tai chi as alternatives.

While reducing the chance of developing essential tremor is not possible, there are some things you can do in the meantime to ensure that you are as fit and healthy as possible. If you are a fit and healthy person, you will be able to take on your essential tremor with a much more capable and positive mindset. Don’t delay, if you think you might be susceptible to them due to your family history, it is never too early to start making changes.
