Hong Kong resident confirmed positive for H9N2 avian influenza

For the first time in four years, Hong Kong health officials today are reporting a human case of avian influenza A (H9N2) in a 86-year-old Hong Kong resident living in Shenzhen.

Centre for Health Protection (CHP) Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said the elderly patient, who has underlying illnesses, developed chills and a cough since December 28. He returned to Hong Kong on the same day and was admitted to a North District Hospital isolation ward.

He was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital today in stable condition. His clinical diagnosis was chest infection.

H9N2 is an avian flu subtype that mainly affects ducks and chickens but can also pass to humans, causing mild symptoms. Over the years the H9N2 influenza strain caused illness in several children aged nine months to 5 years in Hong Kong with the latest occurring in December 2009.

Dr. Leung notes that the patient had no recent poultry contact, consumption of undercooked poultry, or contact with patients. His home contact in Shenzhen is asymptomatic.
