Hispanic activists, Voto Latino, claim that Trump’s immigration plans will cause chaos, ‘terrorizes’ communities
Voto Latino, the leading civic media organization empowering American Latino millennials, is releasing a statement from President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar on the Administration’s executive actions announced today that will affect immigrant communities.
“Voto Latino stands with the 16 million Americans living in mixed-status families and millions more undocumented immigrants across the country. The executive actions on immigration announced today are extreme and go against the ideals of our country.
“Adding Border Patrol agents, building an ineffective wall, ending sanctuary cities, and upping immigration enforcement will only create deportation chaos that terrorizes American communities.
“It’s no surprise that the President is taking such extreme actions, as his campaign used fear mongering and attacks against immigrants and refugees, unlike any other in modern history. And now as President, he’s exploiting fear instead of leading us into the future.
“But let us be clear: the President’s actions do not reflect the views of the majority of Americans.
“In 2015, Voto Latino testified before President Obama’s policing task force, the blueprint to modernize police enforcement, using recommendations from our audience, and they expressed the importance of separating local police from immigration enforcement. Latinos see this as the single clearest policy to uphold the public safety of all Americans.
“Beyond being a waste of taxpayer money, these actions will create chaos in an already unjust immigration system. We will work tirelessly to protect our undocumented brothers and sisters by creating sanctuary spaces in cities and college campuses across the country.
“Voto Latino will push our country to live up to its moral imperative of being a beacon of hope for millions across the world, not a country that builds walls.”
